What is Recruitment?
You’ve probably heard a lot of talk about “rush” during the first few weeks of each semester at CWRU. Generally, rush is simply a time when a person is checking out fraternities to see which one he wants to join. The term rush brings along with it negative images of animal house events meant to degrade one’s dignity. We abhor such activities and have refocused our efforts towards recruitment. We are not opening our doors to a party, we are actively seeking and meeting like-minded men who wish share similar interests, want to succeed in school, and like to have fun.

What is DKE Recruitment?
“It’s the best time of your life.” Deke recruitment at Beta Chi is an ongoing process. The recruitment program at CWRU takes place in August-September and January-February and usually lasts two to three weeks. It is full of events like BBQs, games, and off the wall entertainment where you can enjoy enjoy yourself and have a good times. Chances are we’ll meet you on campus at some point, but you should feel free to stop by our house anytime. Recruitment is about making new friends. It is a chance to learn the opportunities and involvement offered by the Fraternity experience. Although this period is only two weeks each semester, you, and your friends can stop by the chapter house, anytime, regardless of membership status.

What is DKE like?
We are proud of our fraternity and the more than 70,000 men who have become our brothers since Delta Kappa Epsilon was founded in 1844. Dekes come from every walk of life. Many have gone on to distinguish themselves in politics, the arts, sciences, sports, education, and the humanities. Six U.S. Presidents have been Dekes, the most of any fraternity. The first man to reach the North Pole was a Deke and a Deke has carried our flag to the moon. Our chapter boasts many executives and even a United States Supreme Court Justice. You will find Dekes in every comer of the world, but whatever their background or station in life, all are united by the shared experience of membership in Delta Kappa Epsilon.

How does DKE view Academics?
Delta Kappa Epsilon membership requires attention to solid academic performance, good scholarship, and achievement. Approaching academics with discipline is a principle upheld by Delta Kappa Epsilon men. A strong academic record not only prepares you for success after you get your degree, it represents your strength of mind and character to the world. A successful college experience is the basis of the Greek system.

What about Leadership Development?
Delta Kappa Epsilon offers young men the opportunity to develop as leaders and prepares them to use those skills during their lifetime. Leadership opportunities abound during your university years. Delta Kappa Epsilon enables and encourages your leadership in campus and chapter activities, in addition to those in the community. These activities are often service, social, or sports oriented.

At least in America, studies show that 76 percent of the nation’s senators. 85 percent of key executives, and 71 percent of the men listed in “Who’s Who In America” are fraternity men.

What about Social Events?
Delta Kappa Epsilon strives to take part in many social engagements meant to build gentlemanly character. A number of functions are held throughout the year where active members are given the opportunity to meet various members of the sororities, other fraternities, and non-affiliated students on campus. These functions include open and private gatherings, and various other activities and get-togethers where members are welcome to invite friends to the House. These functions are designed to enrich your experience at CWRU. Do not forget that employers are not looking only for people with good grades but people with the ability to communicate, people that have the ability to interact with others, people with some business acumen and life skills. Delta Kappa Epsilon can provide the opportunities to develop and hone those skills.

So what’s required of a member?
Members of Delta Kappa Epsilon are influential, involved, and motivated members of the University Community. Be it scholarship, sports, or social, our members enjoy it all. Many young men have accepted the challenge to become a member of this fraternity, and with a little dedication you could as well. Delta Kappa Epsilon men know that their commitment to the fraternity requires effort and discipline to support the services the fraternity provides to its members and the community.

Like any group you may wish to join, there are annual membership dues. Membership dues go to pay the expenses of the active chapter as well as the costs that must be remitted to the Delta Kappa Epsilon International so that you will be a recognized member of the fraternity at our chapters across North America. These fees are not high and we do offer support for those who may not be able to afford the charges. We believe that money should never be an issue when it comes to joining DKE.

Does DKE haze?
NO! We will never put you in a situation where you do not have control over what is happening. We treat each other as gentleman and will treat you will the same respect. We will never do anything to degrade your gentlemanly dignity.

So how do I join DKE?
It’s so simple. Call the DKE House at 216-754-1909 or stop by at our house on 2253 Murray Hill Rd. It’s on the South Side of Campus at the bottom of the hill. Come in and say “Hey, how’s it goin’, I’m thinking about joining DKE.”

If you’re ready to continue in the process of becoming a member, tell us. Then if the guys think you’re a good man, soon you will most likely become a pledge. Being a pledge is a lot of fun because you will be part of what is called a pledge class. These other men, who also were rushing, will probably be your friends for life. Now because DKE is secretive, we can’t tell you much more. But that’s the fun of pledging, and that’s one reason why we feel that our brotherhood is strong.
